The Allied army's rapid breakout from the Normandy beachhead in June 1944 required an equally mammoth effort to maintain supply lines capable of bringing vital ammunition, fuel and food to the troops at the front. This strategic supply effort, named the "Red Ball Express" took place over 81 days from Summer to Fall of 1944 and involved using over 5,400 2 1/2 ton cargo trucks to bring more than 420,00 tons of materials from Normandy supply depots to the front lines. The success of this huge operation reminds us that often the most important military achievements are the ones that take place behind the combat lines.
