Airfix 1/72 Airspeed A.S.51 Horsa Mk.I/II Glider
Description
The Horsa was the primary glider used in the airborne landings on both D-Day in June 1944 and Arnhem in September 1944. The Horsa consisted of thirty separate parts and was primarily made out of wood. This allowed production to be subcontracted out with some parts being made by furniture manufacturers! In all, over 3,700 were built.
The Horsa Mk.I was designed to carry 25 soldiers while the Horsa Mk.II had a hinged nose and carried vehicles and guns. This kit from Airfix can be built as either a Mk.I or a Mk.II and has markings for the following gliders:
- Airspeed Horsa Mk.I, RZ108, RAF, used during "Operation Overlord", Normandy, June 1944.
- Airspeed Horsa Mk.II, RJ245, RAF, used in training, 1944.
- Airspeed Horsa Mk.I, RF141, USAAF, used during "Operation Overlord", Normandy, June 1944.
